I am a Black trans man. I have had a blessed life. When I heard to pick myself up by the bootstraps back in the 1970's, I took that shit seriously. After I left the military, I began my IT career and without a college degree, went from a measly computer operator (1981) to software consultant until I retired in 2006. I was making six-figures by that time. I got no help from anybody but got real good at picking people's brains π. They left me to sink or swim, and I shocked the shit out of everybody when I became an Olympic-style swimmer in IT. BTW, my father was the late-great Bob Gibson, Hall-of-Fame pitcher of the St. Louis Cardinals. Nothing I had anything to do with, but it's a strong bragging point. π
Sorry, folks, I tried to put this in here a second after I posted it, but the internet was having issues and I couldn't get to this link. Ken Schultz did a bang-up job on this one. I was so pleased, I cried the first time I read it. He captured me perfectly. Enjoy.
What a lovely and generous offering! Last week I received the news that my debut novel, βWhat the Living Doβ (Regal House, 2024) has been shortlisted for the Canadian Authors Association, Fred Kerner Book Award. The winner will be announced on December 13. Fingers crossed. Toes too!
Book 7 in my romantic-mystery "Mischief in Moonstone" novellas set in Wisconsin dropped a couple of days ago, and Chapter 1 of ALL SHE WORE WAS A BOW is at my publisher's website. It's a "cozy" book set at the holiday, so she does actually wear more than a bow, if you're wondering. It's told from a cowboy's point of view. He's come to Wisconsin to convince a buddy that he should call off his wedding, and things go slightly awry with the wedding decorator. https://writers-exchange.com/all-she-wore-was-a-bow/
I'm shouting out Cambria Kingsley for her fictional 'Tales From Paper Birch' which she describes as "a found family, a bed and a roof from which to watch the world burn, the last stop for an enterprising crew of artists and friends in the American Southwest." https://talesfrompaperbirch.substack.com/p/the-story-so-far
And Rochelle Hanslow for the her witchy debut novel 'Made of Ash' which she's serializing here on Substack. The tension really builds in the latest installment: https://rochellehanslow.substack.com/p/made-of-ash
Looking forward to reading through everyone's brags!
So...I just started a brand new STACK! Launched on Friday, it's called Wham! Bam! Thank You! Slam! and it's a monthly storytelling event for cis/trans women and non-binary folx. The best thing for anyone to do to find out more is to go check it out. I'm so proud of this, and ready to support women's voices (I already do, but this my wheelhouse, live storytelling). it will be a place for people to tell their stories, to get support and promotion for their stacks, and to maybe do something they've never done before and meet other fab writers on the platform!
Get in touch if you want to tell a story or have questions. After 30 hours on Substack we ranked #11 Rising in Humor! I want to stir things up. xo
I'm a 72-year-old woman dealing with cognitive issues, working through lifestyle changes, connections to community and nature, spirituality, exercise, and a healthy low glycemic diet, among other things. I share my life and perspective at Intentional Wisdom with Cathy R. Payne. I am the author of a history book based on a five-year interview project titled, Saving the Guinea Hogs: The Recovery of an American Homestead Breed. I'm proud that I have recreated myself over the years, completed a dissertation, published a book, and have over 300 subscribers. Four of them are even paid subscribers!

Here's a post I'm very happy with: https://realdirtnap.substack.com/p/223-days-sober.
I will note that if you tune in Friday, you'll see a Q&A with Smallstack's Robin Taylor.
And, if you liked my comment, you should read my Q&A with Robin: https://realdirtnap.substack.com/p/whats-in-a-name
It's so good! Thank you for sharing!
I've rebranded my Substack and came back with a new passion for writing. I'm really excited about the direction I'm heading in!
Love to hear your excitement! I did a Substack rebrand recently too! <3
Something I enjoyed writing a couple months ago:

Oh! Bragging! How awkward / important.
I'll share that I recently had work in the "Creativity" issue of Microcosm's Neurodivergent Pride Zine series. I'm pretty proud of that, actually.
Also it's a *great* issue and worth picking up:

So excited to receive my copy when I go to Rochester next week!!!
Thanks so much, Robin! Today Mexico Soul was listed at #23 in Rising in Travel! I can't tell you how excited I am. https://mexicosoul.substack.com

I got a very unexpected call from an editor who had read my Substack and offered me my very own magazine column. I wrote about it, of course.

Wow! How cool is that?
I know! Iβm still kind of pinching myself.
I'm bragging on the level of playfulness I'm bringing to my newsletter starting with the next issue (slowing down when things feel urgent): https://open.substack.com/pub/thecreativecourageproject/p/how-to-un-hustle-when-everything?r=sqait&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Here's a story I'm proud of. I call it fiction. Any similarity between my dog Toby and the dog, Walter, in the story is of course coincidental.
And any resemblance of the couple in the story to my wife and me is of course also coincidental.
And I'm glad to say the ending is, indeed, entirely fictional.
