Meet the SmallStack Team + New Live Thread Tomorrow!
Come lift up your favorite small substacks and find new friends
Well folks, we’re officially 6 weeks old now. SmallStack has been growing by leaps and bounds in this short time. Today we have two big items to bring you: We are announcing The Team and launching SmallTalk!
Just a little while ago we put out a call for volunteers to come help us build the structure and foundation of SmallStack, and we were astounded at the responses. 57 of you offered your time, your experience, and the passion you feel for the community here. That’s like an entire ketchup bottle of volunteers!
And really, of all the problems we could face, this one felt the most joyful. Personally, it was so validating that others wanted to lend a hand and support their fellow creators in this space. This is part of the dream that built SmallStack, and you all are making that happen.
Thank you.
To those of you who applied and were not selected, we hope you understand that we wanted to find ways to say yes to all of you. It’s not easy to ask for help, and you showed up. We are humbled by your generosity. But we have our own limitations, and there’s no way to gracefully organize so many willing hands when we are still designing what SmallStack needs to become in these early months. Once our footing is more secure, SmallStack will ask for a new round of volunteers to carry us through our first full year of existence. Keep an eye on our Team page for those openings.
Volunteers are just one of many ways the community here supports SmallStack. Subscribing shows us your interest in uplifting the voices of smaller publications on Substack. Those of you who become paid subscribers are making it possible for us to build an amazing Library, host some great Featured Posts, and continue to share our Guest Post series. We honestly could not do this work without you!
If you see something here on SmallStack that you really like, you can also share it with someone! Sharing a post helps others see the awesome work we do, the supportive community that is growing around us, and the incredible work being created by folks with small subscriber numbers.
Building the Team
We are so excited to share this news with you! Please give a very warm welcome to the nine new members of The SmallStack Team who are joining “the Robins” behind the scenes! To learn more about each of these awesome folks, head over to our Team page.

And while it might look like we’re all having a blast together (oh, we absolutely are!), we will also be doing very substantial work to create the landscape of SmallStack for everyone.I’d also like to express enormous gratitude to SmallStack’s Director,
. I often find myself wondering how I got through those early weeks without her organization, dedication, and humor. Pulling together a new crew of helping hands is a big job, and Robin helps it feel as satisfying as an all-you-can-eat pancake bar.SmallTalk is Coming Tomorrow!
That’s right, we’re starting a new regular item here on SmallStack—SmallTalk!
SmallTalk uses Substack’s Threads feature to hold discussions for the community. SmallTalk gives you a place to meet and talk to one another, to share your thoughts on guided topics, and to build community with other small stacks. Think of it like a cozy breakfast nook where you can gather with friends to share your thoughts.
SmallTalk will happen every other week (for now). The Threads feature allows us to create a topic and for you to engage in the comments. SmallTalk will cover a range of things designed to facilitate great conversations with your fellow SmallStackers. When they post something enticing, jump in and share your thoughts!
And, to get us off on the right foot, our first discussion tomorrow will ask you to tell us about another publication you think deserves the spotlight. SmallStack is all about lifting up others, and this is your opportunity to show us who is worthy. Full details on our first SmallTalk will be posted on Tuesday, July 2.
To find all the conversations happening in SmallTalk, head over to the new tab we have created on our site named “SmallTalk,” as shown in the image above.
Small starts to big things,

I love the idea of having people nominate OTHER writers for people to read.
